The Relatively Brief and Exciting History of Skeet Shooting

The sport of Skeet Shooting began in Andover, Massachusetts in the year 1920. A small group of hunters gathered together at the Glen Rock Kennels to shoot clay targets as a way of practicing wing-shooting. After a short time their practice became a bit of a competition and they decided to create a uniform procedure, to keep things even.

Charles Davies, a grouse hunter, is sometimes credited with creating the sport. The competitors began to shoot in a 25 yard radius, with the circle marked like the face of a clock. Each shooter took two shots from each of the twelve stations with the trap set at the 12 O'Clock station The game changed a bit when a neighbor began raising chickens next door and complained about the shells. The problem was solved by setting a second trap at the 6 O'clock station.

William H. Foster, one of the gentlemen who started the game, thought this might develop into a national sport. Just six years after the first 'shooting games' Foster ran ads in two national hunting magazines. He offered $100 for the best name for this new sport. Mrs. Gerturde Hurlbutt of Dayton, Montana was the winner. She entered "Skeet" which was an old Scandinavian word for 'shoot'.

Now the game had a name and over the next decade the sport grew in popularity. In 1935 the First National Championship Skeet Shooting Competition took place in Cleveland, Ohio. The event moved from city to city and continued to grow in popularity.

Skeet shooting pretty much stopped as a civilian sport during World War II. There was a shortage of ammunition and equipment, and most of the best shooters were now in the armed forces. The military, however, discovered that skeet shooting could teach and improve skills during gunnery training. Many of the great skeet shooters became instructors.

After the war the National Skeet Shooting Association was officially incorporated in 1946. The organization has moved around, but has continued to grow. Skeet shooting was included in the International Olympics in 1968.

Now Skeet shooting is a popular form of sports shooting. If you're interested in trying your hand at skeet shooting, check the web for a local club. Go to your gun cabinet and choose a double-barreled over and under shotgun with 28/30 inch barrels and open chokes. You will soon learn to enjoy the sport that began about 90 years ago in Andover, Massachusetts.
